A Message from Social Artist Joyce McNamara
As the old curse goes “May you live in interesting times”, a case can be made that we are living in very interesting times. I often fall into despair over the question of how I can make a difference. So with that in mind I’d like to ask you a few questions.
Many of you have experienced the inspiring genius of Jean Houston and Peggy Rubin and the field of Social Artistry. In hours of workshops, intensives, and salons. Can you remember the sensations of those times? Do you recall the discovery that you are infinitely more than you thought? Were you filled with wonder? Were you amazed that the world, the universe, all of creation was available to you to explore? Remember how your relationship to time and space shifted? If you do then you also know without a doubt that the body of work called Social Artistry opens doors, within one’s self and to consciousness. How valuable do you think this is?
I for one would answer that this is critical for these times. As Christopher Fry asked in his poem, “A Sleep of Prisoners, It takes / So many thousand years to wake, / But will you wake for pity’s sake!” Yes, will we wake? I believe that we who have experienced Social Artistry have begun. I’ve grown and am better able to navigate these times because of these experiences.
Now there is something YOU can do. This summer July 8 through the 15th, Social Artistry is coming to Ashland, Oregon in The Odyssey. A joint sponsored event through Jean Houston Foundation, Emerging Leaders, The Launching Pad, and ELLSSA, the 2016 Odyssey is a deeply immersive excursion into Social Artistry. Within the program Richard Geer will offer a powerful StoryBridge journey, an exploration into the power of story to transform self and community. Jean and Peggy will also bring their wisdom sparks to ignite personal and relational change.
What can you do?
I ask you to reflect on how much this work has meant to you? Then think what it would have meant to have had this work earlier in you life? Do you know someone who is ready for such an opportunity? Can you help them get to Ashland and to the Odyssey?
I have two such remarkable people in my life. Both young men come from the small town in the desert of California where I spent most of my adult life. My thought was that if they could get to the Odyssey and meet other people who are open and exploring options, personal and global, then they would see the world and their options differently. The team offering the Social Artistry training is rich with courageous explorers and the opportunities that Jean, Peggy, and Richard Geer provide will gift these young men in ways that can’t be experienced any other place.
I offered to sponsor them.
See what you can do? You too can facilitate someone coming to the Odyssey. You too can gift someone with this opportunity. It is a form of paying it forward, sharing the wisdom found in the work of Social Artistry. You’ve grown and benefited from this work. You are better able to live in these times because of your experience. Let’s spread the word, expand the field, open some minds. Join me in sponsoring friends or family to come to the Odyssey in July. Go to http://socialartistryodyssey.com for the Odyssey information or on Facebook go to #saodyssey.
